Aviation Nation was held on Nov. 14 and 15 '09. As usual Nellis AFB put on another good show although, this year the Aviation Nation staff did not organize the show. It was done by the personel of Nellis Public Affairs and the fine airmen and women of Nellis AFB. They did a really great job. I attended the Saturday show. (11/14) The flying display was put in a situation of uncertainty a few days before the show. The Air Force Brass decided it would be more beneficial to send the USAF F-22 Raptor Demo Team to Dubai for their annual Air Show. Reason being that the United Arab Emirates was debating on purchasing the F-35 Lightning. Fourtunately the Nellis staff worked up an F-22 display with one of the Raptors based here at Nellis. It was a short basic routine but, at least we got to see a Raptor doing its thing. The C-17, A-10, Belgian F-16 and the Thunderbirds were also included in the flying display. A Navy F/A-18F put on a spirited display. Korean Warbirds and WWII Warbirds also took to the air as well. As a matter of fact the F-86 Sabre display was highlighted by a drop tank release. Of course this was unplanned. It fell on the runway grassy area and no one was hurt. The static display was of course superb. It included just about all current USAF aircraft and UAVs. Not at the show was a U-2, KC-135 or a KC-10. Two Aggressors in the form of an F-16C and F-15C were on display. An F-22A Raptor was in the static line also. The Nellis staff puts a line of its fighters behind barricades giving the photographers a chance at good shots. Two Navy Hornets were represented by an F/A-18C and an F/A-18F Super Hornet . Holloman AFB was kind enough to send a QF-4E Phantom II to take part in the USAF Heritage Flight. All in all in was a great show of USAF Air Power on the ground and in the air. Still one of the best Air Shows in the US. Of course I'll be back in 2010.
