Aviation Nation 2011: Nov. 2011
70 Years of Air Power in Las Vegas
     US Air Power                   Page 1
    Fighters and Attack
Having attended Aviation Nation since
2003 I knew the airmen and women of
Nellis would put on a good air show.
This year was no exception. I read the
preshow info  on the Nellis web site.
The difference this year was no F-22A
Raptor flying demo on the schedule.
With the previous grounding of
Raptors due to on board oxygen
system problems this omission was
understandable. Flying status of the
F-22 had just been reinstated at the
end of Sept.
The preview on the Nellis web site
stated there would be a B-2 Spirit on
static. Another treat was a Mi-24 Hind
attack helicopter on static display.  I
had a feeling this was gonna be a
really good show and it was.
  Aircraft static displays was especially
nice this year. All three active USAF
bombers were there. A B-52 BUFF,
B-1B Lancer and a B-2 Stealth Bomber
were in the static display area. Two
F/A-18F Hornets along with a T-45C
Goshawk  were there representing the
US Navy. NASA was kind enough to
send one of there T-38 Talons.  A
QF-4E Phantom flew in from Holloman
AFB, N.M. Always a great sight at any
air show. Phantoms Phorever!
     The flying display was highlighted
of course  by the Thunderbirds. A
Korean War dogfight between a F-86
Sabre and a MiG-15 was featured as
well. The Vietnam Era Air-to-Ground
demo was loud and blast filled. The
simulated dogfight between two
F-15Cs and two F-16C Agrressors
(with expending flares) was a new
feature this year. Hopefully this will be
a regular demo in the coming years. A
C-17 demo, C-130 airdrop and USAF
Heritage Flight rounded out the flying
display.
Again Nellis is in the top 5 military air
shows in the U.S. I can't wait for
Aviation Nation 2012. Enjoy The
