The Eagle's Nest : F-15 Eagle
and F15E Strike Eagle

This page features the F-15 Eagle and
also the F-15E Strike Eagle. The
original F-15s were designed to
replace the F-4 Phantom in the air
defense role. The term Air Superiority
Fighter was given to the Eagle. With its
two Pratt and Whitney F100-PW-220
powerplants the Eagle can easily
reach Mach 2+ with an altitude
capability of 60,000 ft.  The jet is
equipped with an AN/APG-63 radar to
detect and track targets up to 60 miles
away. Armament for the air superiority
models consist of 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders
and 4 AIM-7 Sparrow missiles. The
AIM-120 AMRAAM has now taken the
place of most Sparrows. An M-61A 20
mm cannon is also built into the
wingroot.   The F-15 has two twin
vertical tails and two very large wings
designed for air combat manuevering.
At air shows in its hey day the F-15
was THE plane to beat in air displays.
There was always a rivalry among the
Eagle, Tomcat and Fighting Falcon
pilots to see who could put on the best
display. Those were the days.
Today the F-15 is still flying w/ the Air
National Guard and Reserves. Very
few USAF active squadrons still fly it.
The Raptor is moving in. A few Allies
fly the Eagle including Japan, S. Korea,
and Singapore.
The Strike Eagle was developed in the
late 1980's as an attack platform used
to deliver precision guided weapons
against ground targets. It did an
exceptional job in Desert Storm. The
F-15E should be in active USAF
service for at least another decade or
two.
